Japan Constructs Laboratories in Rubona SS, Kabarole

 

Japan handed over two science laboratory blocks with furniture and science equipment to Rubona Secondary School in Kabarole. It is the only government aided senior school in Kisoromo Sub-County and has over 500 students. Despite the fact that the Ministry of Education made the three science subjects compulsory at all secondary school level, Rubona SS did not have a science laboratory, and was using an old classroom without any science facilities as a laboratory.

The school has well trained science teachers who has been trained through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Secondary Science and Mathematics Teacher (SESEMAT) Project, who now will be able to pass on their knowledge to the students without difficulty.

Ambassador Kazuo Minagawa said that the laboratories would enable students to have a hands-on experience and thus demystify the attitude that science subjects are difficult. He commented that inadequate infrastructures in schools could greatly impede the normal learning process.

The donation by Japan is part of the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), a scheme administered by the Japanese Embassy to support community-based development projects. Japan, steadily promoting ownership of and partnership with Africa through Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) process, is committed to boosting economic growth, achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and consolidation of peace and good governance in Africa.
